Being locked down and having limited movement, as a result of this global pandemic - COVID-19, has given me an opportunity for introspection and reflection. I would like to begin by stating that I am extremely grateful to God Almighty for allowing me to connect with my audience via this blog and to share my thoughts and feelings about what’s going on during these volatile times. I am also eternally grateful for waking up each and everyday.
Yes, the climate we are living in today is extremely volatile. For way too long black and brown people in America have suffered, inordinately, at the hands of people leveraging their assumed positions of power and influence to oppress and dehumanize us. The tipping point of what we have witnessed in the streets of America and around the world is long over due: not the violence but the massive global protests. The incredible musician and song writer Marvin Gaye sang about this in his hit single, What’s Goin’ On which was released in 1971— almost 50 years ago. The songs’ lyrics speak to the troubles during that that time and they are still relevant today. This means nothing much has changed: it’s the same mind-set that existed from years past repackaged and reinvented.
Mother, mother
There's too many of you crying
Brother, brother, brother
There's far too many of you dying
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today,
Father, father
We don't need to escalate
You see, war is not the answer
For only love can conquer hate
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today,
Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me, so you can see
Oh, what's going on
What's going on
Yeah, what's going on
Ah, what's going on
I am grateful to those fathers and mothers whose children have gone to war, hundreds of miles away, to fight and protect the freedoms that many enjoy here in America. The tragedy is that, in some instances, black and brown soldiers return from fighting a war afar off to fight a different kind of war within the borders of America - a war of against discrimination, hatred, social injustice and economic inequality.
